My property is in a bushfire zone. What do I need to know about BAL compliance for landscaping?
Any new structure, pergola, deck, retaining wall, shed, on a BAL-rated property must use compliant materials and maintain appropriate separation from vegetation. We're across the BAL 12.5, 19, and 29 requirements and will design and specify accordingly. We'll check your BAL rating as part of the consultation.
What plants actually thrive in Blue Mountains conditions?
You have access to plants that simply won't survive below the escarpment. Hydrangeas, deciduous maples, ornamental cherries, rhododendrons, cool-climate grevilleas and banksias, agapanthus, camellias. We also work with cold-hardy natives that suit the mountain environment rather than the Penrith plains. We'll prepare a plant list suited to your specific altitude and aspect.
My block has a serious slope. Can you build retaining walls that will last?
Absolutely, this is core work for mountain properties. We assess subsurface conditions (including rock depth), design appropriate wall heights and drainage behind the wall, and use materials suited to the environment. Properly built retaining walls in the mountains need to handle saturated clay and freeze-thaw cycles, we spec for that.
Will the sandstone and rocky soil affect the cost of my project?
It can, particularly for footings, deep drainage, and retaining wall bases. We assess this during the on-site consultation and flag it clearly in the quote. We won't bury unexpected rock excavation costs in a contingency, if the ground is rocky, we'll tell you before you sign.
