A retaining wall holds back tonnes of soil. Get it wrong, skip the drainage, undersize the footing, or choose the wrong material for the site, and it won't last a decade. Kayssa builds in sandstone block, hardwood sleeper, engineered concrete block (Versa-Lok and Allan Block style systems), and natural stone. We match the material to the job: the load, the soil type, the height, and the aesthetics of your property. For walls over 1 metre, which generally require a council Development Application in most NSW LGAs, we work with certifiers and engineers and handle the paperwork so you don't have to.

Site assessment & design
We assess the slope, soil, and what the wall needs to hold back. We recommend the right material and structure, and flag whether you need a DA.

Engineering & approvals (if required)
For walls over 1m, we arrange engineering drawings and submit the Development Application to council. We manage this process.

Excavation & drainage
Footing excavated, compacted gravel base laid, AG drainage pipe installed. Good drainage is what stops walls failing, we never skip it.

Build & backfill
Wall constructed course by course to the engineer's spec, then properly backfilled and compacted. Site graded and cleared.

Common questions about retaining walls
Do I need council approval for a retaining wall?
In most NSW councils including Penrith City Council, walls over 1m in height require a Development Application. Some councils have different thresholds, we'll check your specific LGA before quoting. We handle the DA process and engineering certification as part of the build cost.
Which material lasts longest?
Engineered concrete block systems (like Versa-Lok) are the most durable and low-maintenance over the long term. Sandstone looks beautiful and lasts decades when properly built. Hardwood sleepers are cost-effective but will eventually rot, typically 15–25 years depending on drainage conditions. We'll give you an honest comparison for your budget.
Why do retaining walls fail?
Almost always drainage. Water builds up behind the wall, the soil becomes saturated, and the hydrostatic pressure pushes the wall forward. We install AG pipe and gravel drainage on every wall, without exception. This is the most important part of the job.
Can you build a wall on a boundary?
Boundary walls have additional requirements, you may need neighbour consent and council notification regardless of height. We'll advise at the assessment stage and document the process properly.
How long does a retaining wall project take?
A standard residential retaining wall (under 1m, 15–20m run) typically takes 3–5 days. Larger projects requiring engineering and council approval add 4–8 weeks for the approval process before construction begins. We'll give you a realistic project timeline upfront.
