A pergola or deck isn't a luxury, it's the part of a Sydney home that earns its value every warm weekend from October to April, and with the right covering, year-round. We build outdoor structures that feel solid underfoot and overhead: properly footed posts, quality joinery, and timber or steel that's specced for Australian conditions rather than whatever was cheapest at the merchant that week.
We work across the full range of outdoor living structures, open timber pergolas in merbau or spotted gum, colorbond-roofed pergolas for full protection, insulated panel roofs for premium entertaining areas, and decking in hardwood or composite depending on your budget and maintenance preferences. Every structure is built to BCA requirements and, where council approval is required, we handle the paperwork.

Design & approvals
We measure up, discuss the structure and materials you want, and advise on council requirements. Most attached pergolas in NSW require approval, we submit the application.

Footings & posts
Concrete footings poured to engineer's specification. Posts set and braced. This is the foundation the rest of the structure sits on, we don't cut corners here.

Frame & roof
Beams, rafters, and battens or roof sheets installed. Flashing and weatherproofing completed where the structure meets the house.

Deck & finish
Decking boards laid, fixed, and trimmed. Balustrade, steps, and handrails fitted. Timber oiled or stained. Final inspection and handover.

Every quote is custom. These are the main things that shape the final price:
- Size of the structure, bay dimensions and post spacing
- Roof type, open battens are cheaper than colorbond or insulated panel
- Timber species, merbau is the most cost-effective hardwood; spotted gum and ironbark cost more
- Composite vs hardwood decking, composite costs more upfront but needs less maintenance
- Whether a balustrade and steps are required (adds cost and sometimes triggers additional BCA requirements)
- Council approval fees and engineering certification for larger structures
Common questions about pergolas & decking
Do I need council approval for a pergola?
Most attached pergolas in NSW require a Development Application or a Complying Development Certificate. The rules vary by council and structure size. Penrith City Council has specific exempt development provisions. We check what applies to your block and handle the application as part of the job. Don't build first and ask later, unapproved structures create problems at sale.
Covered or open pergola, which is better?
An open pergola (timber battens or beams, no solid roof) is cheaper and lets light through, great for climbing plants or a relaxed garden aesthetic. A covered pergola (colorbond or insulated panel) gives you a genuinely usable outdoor room in rain or harsh sun. For Western Sydney summers, most clients end up wanting a covered option once they've lived with an open one.
Timber or composite decking?
Hardwood decking (merbau or spotted gum) looks better and ages beautifully, but needs oiling every 1–2 years to maintain. Composite boards are lower maintenance and hold colour well, but look slightly different to real timber. We'll show you samples of both and give you an honest price comparison.
How long does a pergola and deck take to build?
Once approvals are in place, a standard pergola and deck (30–50m²) typically takes 5–8 working days. The approvals process, council application to approval, usually runs 4–8 weeks. We sequence the job so material ordering happens during the approval wait.
How long will the timber last?
Quality hardwood framing (H3-treated or naturally durable species) will last 30+ years with normal maintenance. The deck surface needs periodic oiling or sanding to maintain appearance and resist checking. We include a timber maintenance schedule with every handover.
